| With the commander-in-chief of lawlessness and disorder in the White House, opportunities for skullduggery abound for this election. Whether you believe this election is for the "soul of our nation" (I do), it has been said over and over again that this is the most important election of our lifetimes.

Usually, a statement like that would be considered hyperbole, but in this case I think it's an understatement. In his first term, Trump has damaged our country in ways large and small. Were he to win a second term, it's likely we would not have a recognizable country left.

Accordingly, I chose to vote as early as possible. I always vote by mail (and this year everybody is voting by mail), and ordinarily I would have just slipped my ballot into the mailbox and not given it a second thought. But with the shenanigans going on at the post office under Trumps buddy Louis DeJoy, that seemed an unnecessary additional risk.

So for the first time ever, I decided that I would deposit my ballot in a dropbox provided by the Riverside County Registrar of Voters. It was conveniently located in a courtyard at city hall and supervised by someone from the registrar's office. When I arrived there was one person ahead of me, who seemed to be having some difficulty inserting his ballot, for no apparent reason. When it was my turn, the county employee checked the back of my ballot envelope to make sure I had filled in all the required information. As I turned around to leave, four more cars of voters with ballots in their hot little hands were ready to cast their votes.

Today I got a text saying that my ballot was received and will be counted. According to another notice from the county registrar, the mail-in votes will be the first votes reported on election night. This is excellent, because in previous elections, the mail-in votes haven't been counted until quite late in the process.

Obviously I am not the only person to follow this strategy: as of today, about 30 million Americans have cast their ballots, either by mail or by early voting.

Our best hope is for a resounding thrashing of DJTrump and all his enablers. Then we can get back to actually battling the pandemic and restoring our government.
