Where are they now?

I thought it would be interesting, and perhaps instructive, to see how the price has changed for shares that I've sold in the past year (1-Jun-04 – 1-Jun-05).

Biggest gainers

The five stocks that have made the greatest gain since I sold shares are:

Date SoldTickerSelling
Price
Current Price
(17-Jun-05)
$ Change% Change
6/1/2004HANS$24.16$81.17$57.01236%
7/28/2004CLHB$9.40$23.18$13.78147%
11/16/2004CRXL$11.50$23.68$12.18106%
5/9/2005DSTI$8.20$16.13$7.9397%
12/13/2004RADS$6.26$11.61$5.3585%

For the 85 stocks that have gained in price since I sold shares, the average gain is 30%. Bear in mind that that average is made up of stocks sold as long ago as one year and ones sold as recently as one month ago. Looking at just the gaining stocks sold earliest, June and July of 2004, the average gain is 53%

I should clearly beat myself for not having had the patience to wait for these.

Biggest losers

The five stocks that have lost the most since I sold shares are:

Date SoldTickerSelling
Price
Current Price
(17-Jun-05)
$ Change% Change
12/29/2004OCA$6.50$1.44-$5.06-78%
6/4/2004ULGX$14.35$4.45-$9.90-69%
7/19/2004VLTS$9.20$3.00-$6.20-67%
5/11/2005BCGI$5.75$2.17-$3.58-62%
11/16/2004RAE$8.80$3.38-$5.42-62%

For the 85 stocks that have gone down in price since I sold shares, the average loss is 22%. Looking at the losing stocks sold earliest, June and July of 2004, the average loss is 30%

I think I should take credit for having recognized these losers when I saw them.

Lessons?

The number of losers and gainers was exactly the same. (How did that happen?) And since the gainers gained more than the losers lost, I would be farther ahead if I had sold nothing and kept them all! But of course I couldn't have done that, even if I had wanted to. Trader Paul does not have that much capital!

But seriously. I don't know that there are any earth-shattering lessons to be learned from this exercise. However, it seems there is profit to be made in figuring out which stocks to wait out and having the patience to do so. I know I've become quicker to take profits and run. At the same time, I feel driven to that pattern by virtue of having held on too long to too many turkeys.
