Ringing in the New Year
January 1, 2016 | It's required to celebrate New Year's Eve in some fashion, and for several years now we have done it with a nice dinner and watching Anderson Cooper playing straightman to the madcap antics of Kathy Griffin in Times Square on CNN.
The duo (Kathy and Anderson) are now a fixture on CNN and it's always fun to watch Kathy being maximally provocative while Anderson giggles and sometimes holds up signs saying, for instance, "No nudity" — which is the definition of futile. From time to time they cut away to other locations. This year they spent an inordinate amount of time televising Hershey, Pennsylvania (dropping a giant kiss), and Memphis, Tennessee (dropping a malfunctioning guitar on Beale Street). Don Lemon was happily slurping down cocktails in New Orleans and at one point threatened to get into the hot tub. It didn't happen, except to soak his feet.
We did miss the usual visit to Key West to watch the drag queen descend in her ruby shoe. Alas, you can't always get what you want.
Although we didn't realize it was a competition, Bob clearly won the hosting sweepstakes. Let's start with the silver swag bags. Definitely overkill for containing a noisemaker, a funny hat, and a fake-money chocolate bar. But a statement, nonetheless.
Then move on to the Mumm champagne — two bottles! — that he has been husbanding for several years.
Finally there was the rib roast, done to perfection resting on a bed of fingerling potatoes. Mercy!
All in all, it was a jolly evening, and then we all went home at a reasonable hour. Our beds were calling our names and, in any case, we wanted to be off the streets before the police set up their drunk-driving enforcements.
