The usual suspects, the usual over-eating
December 26, 2013 | You knew there would be trouble when the appetizers began to proliferate.
There were two firm commitments to bring appetizers: I would bring bacon-wrapped stuffed dates and Rafe would bring "an appetizer" which turned out to be a vat of guacamole and a barrel of tortilla chips. But as we sat around a table on the patio, more appetizers appeared as if by spontaneous generation: bacon-wrapped scallops (you can never have too much bacon), spiced nuts and fruits, cheese sticks, mixed nuts, and more!
A few glasses of bubbly, salty starters, and by the time the ham came out of the oven, most had already doubled or tripled their daily calorie allotment. What's a person to do? It would be impolite not to partake heartily of the baked ham with fig sauce, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and a big salad.
And let's not forget the Grand Marnier cheesecake with Kahlua topping for dessert, accompanied by some "choco-wine" that Ken found at Trader Joe's, served up in souvenier shot glasses from our cruises.
