cluster of ripening tomatoes

Tomatoes from the garden

| We've had several days of balmy temperatures in the high 70s and even into the 80s. Caressed by the sun, the tomatoes have begun to ripen.

Last year I was late planting, not getting the plants in until mid-March. But faithful readers will recall the bounteous harvest of tomatoes that nevertheless followed.

"They say" that here in the Coachella Valley the season for planting the vegetable garden is October or early November, and this time around I planted in October. The good news is that I already have fresh tomatoes; the bad news is that the several nights of freezing and near-freezing temperatures took a severe toll on the plants, and I actually had to replace those that didn't make it.

But— the one tomato plant that survived has borne fruit. This morning I reaped the first of my crop:

A precious ripe tomato, direct from the garden
