In a word, demographics
November 7, 2012 | Thank heavens! The country has pulled back from the political cliff.
The recriminations and denials have begun, and over the days and weeks to come there will be a lot of palaver about why Obama won and why Romney lost. But if you really want to know, here is the answer.
The Republican Party has become the party of Old White Guys and their June Cleaver wives complemented by crazies who are contemptuous of government and want to shrink and kill it, all the while drawing their Social Security checks, getting their health care through the Medicare system, etc.
The United States, meanwhile, has become a very diverse country with very large blocs of Hispanics, Asians, African Americans, and other "minorities" — in California, for example, white folks are currently in the minority. It's not just Ward Cleaver who goes off to bring home the bacon; so does the modern June. In this context, the anti-immigrant, anti-women, anti-gay policies of the Repugnicans simply don't work.
Yes, geographically, the election map tonight had a big red swath across the south and up the middle of the country, but that's not where the preponderance of the population lives.
The world goes on. The Republicans should note what happened to the dinosaurs.
