Hummers prepare for first flight
April 27, 2010 | Since their adventure out of the nest a few days ago, the baby hummers have been much more active in the nest, moving about, fluttering their wings, and so forth. Could it be they just want to get out of here before something even more dire happens to them?
Today they began flight preparations in earnest, getting up on the rim of the nest, assuming a flight position, then flapping their little wings as fast as they can, all the while hanging on for dear life. I was able to get a short video of one of these practice sessions. Unfortunately, the camera was hand-held so there's a lot of extraneous jiggling. And, you may want to turn your sound down or even off — the camera's microphone picked up the wind, which was gusting strongly at the time.
