Mother Nature puts on a show

| On Sunday the usual suspects — Réal, Phil, Bob, and Paul, but not Ken — drove to the high desert near Palmdale to see the poppies at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve.

As you near the park you begin to see swaths of orange blanketing the hillsides in the distance. Réal called this "foreplay for the eyes," an apt description. Then about a mile from the park there was a section of road where the poppies were densely covering the hillsides, and people were taking advantage of the scene for a photo-op sitting amongst the poppies, something you cannot do in the park itself.

A long line of cars was at the entrance to the park most of the day

At the park, a long line of cars waited to get in, but once we passed the entrance kiosk, a ranger directed us to "parking on the left," and indeed, someone was pulling out of the very first parking spot just as we arrived. How lucky can you get?

It was a perfect day for poppies: temperatures near 80°F with calm winds. In fact, one of the rangers at the park told us we had come on "the best day of the season."

We all brought our cameras, of course, and could not resist beginning to take pictures as soon as we stepped onto the path. The poppies this year were breath-takingly orange — very saturated, very intense. And with no winds, the poppies were fully open, making it an incredible sight. In comparison to other visits, there were many more poppies this year, but fewer areas of the yellow, blue, and purple flowers we had seen other years. I guess it's why you keep going back — What will Mother Nature have for us this year?

On the way home we could not resist our own photo-op among the poppies. Only a few poppies were sacrificed in the taking of these pictures.
