Festival of lights parade

Pushing back the darkness

Each year Palm Springs kicks off the holiday season with the Festival of Lights parade on the first Saturday night of December. People stake out prime spectating spots, some as early as mid-afternoon, setting up their lawn chairs, benches, and stools. After dark, they settle in with their blankets and heavy winter coats to watch.

The parade itself is the usual assortment of marching bands, floats, equestrians, and sundry vehicles, all lavishly decorated with tiny lights.
