fire on Okanagan Mountain

On fire

Don't mess with Mother Nature

A friend in Vancouver sent me a batch of photos taken by friends of a friend of one of the fires burning in British Columbia near the town of Kelowna. Kelowna is in the Okanagan region of BC, one of the province's prime tourist destinations. See map.

The pictures are just terrific, both as reportage and as images. For those of us lucky enough not to be in the path of a fire now, they serve as a good reminder that it's not nice to mess with Mother Nature, a good thing to keep in mind, for there are very few places in the West that are immune from the threat of fire. I don't know any of the people who took the photos, but it's clear they had an "up close and personal" view — my guess is probably too close and personal. From the filenames, they are credited to: Chris Kearney, Don McPhail, George Guillminot, Gerald Goertsen, Glen Eldstrom, Helena Bowie, John Morrison, John Petty, Larry LeFebvre, Linda Stephenson, Sara Tuppen, Steve Coutts, Trish Sol.
