Summer solstice sunrise

Summer starts today!

I usually see the sun rise indirectly. That is, I see light change on the walls of Palm Canyon from the vantage point of my patio. Today being the solstice and the first day of summer, I decided to go around to the front of the house and watch the sun as it actually rose over the other side of the valley.

It's not unusual for me to see the sunrise, or at least be awake at that time. My body clock simply seems to be set to start the day with the first rays of light, and I've given up fighting it. Besides, the dawn is such a pleasant time in the desert. It's cool, very quiet, and the birds and the beasts are up and about.

According to the US Naval Observatory, sunrise today in Palm Springs was scheduled for 5:36am. I suppose that would be the time if the earth were flat, but in actuality the mountains on the other side of the Coachella Valley get in the way and delay the sighting of the sun for about 10 minutes.

It was a perfectly clear morning, and the orangish glow that heralded the rising sun was a stunning backdrop for the silhouetted palm trees.
